Oh what a glorious Monday!  What did you do this weekend?

I spent the weekend trying to figure out how to get a certain moldy smell out of my carpet.

Apparently when my kids spill water, they cover it up with a couch pillow.

And apparently, when my kids spill water on the carpet, they spill a 5 gallon bucket of it.

So I had three choices:

A) Panic, bring out the box cutter, and cut out square of wet, moldy carpet.
B) Cover it up with a bigger couch pillow.
C) Figure out how to dry & deodorize with the least effort possible.

You guessed it, I chose B.  But then the smell became more of a stench and I realized I needed to act before it became a funk.

I definitely didn’t want my house to get to ‘funk’ stage.

Now, I’m so excited to show you what TOTALLY fixed it, and it took me about 5 minutes.  With 2 ingredients, you really can’t go wrong.

Homemade Peppermint Carpet Deodorizer

Start with Baking Soda & Peppermint Essential Oil.

Add 10 drops of Peppermint Essential Oil to 1 cup of Baking Soda.  Mix well with a fork.

Dry your wet carpet as best you can with towels/fans.

Sprinkle your homemade carpet deodorizer all over that area there.

Spread around with your hand until it’s well mixed in.

Leave there for about a week or so and then vacuum it right up!  Your house will smell heavenly instantly!

At least until your kids spill another bucket of water.
From now on be suspicious of couch pillows on the ground, ’cause you never know.

I bet that peppermint oil smells heavenly on your carpet. Plus, it’s all natural! What could be better than essential oil and baking soda!! I’m glad i found your recipe for a homemade, all natural carpet deodorizer. Thanks again.

We have ants and I researched how to rid my house of the ants. Turns out ants, spiders, and some other common insects hate peppermint. I am going to try this and see how it works.

This is a good tip and it really works – yet you have to be careful when vacuuming it up because it clogs the vacuum pretty bad. At least it did mine and I used a sieve sprinkling on the baking powder.

I do this and it works. Instead of spreading into carpet with my hands, though, I use a broom and sweep it in. Much easier!

You’ve made some decent points there. I checked on the internet to find out more about the issue and found most individuals will go along with your views on this website.

We use a baking soda and lavender oil mixture on our mattresses while we are washing our sheets to get the mattresses smelling fresh. This is particularly helpful for young children’s mattresses once they move into a regular bed from a plastic-covered crib mattress and might still have leaks now and then. 😉
