Weed 'em & Reap

Urban Farming. Healthy Living.

danelle-wolford-gardenWelcome, future healthy superhero!

If you’re like me, you love to take care of your body in the best way possible. We may not have it all together – yet – but we keep learning and trying to improve our health.

Maybe you’ve been able to turn your health around just by eating better. Maybe it’s taken a lot longer than you thought or you still feel a bit hopeless in the “getting healthy” area of your life. Either way, I definitely have been there! My health journey has been a rollercoaster of “Hey! I totally am rocking this healthy lifestyle!” to “nothing’s going to make me feel better”. Does this describe what you’re dealing with?

One big struggle I’ve found in trying to get rid of health issues is the sheer amount of information out there. One article will tell you to avoid sugar, the other will tell you that fat is to blame. And don’t even get me started on arguments over the best protocol for thyroid health or reducing inflammation. There are opinions on all sides! What I can help you with is support. I have a passion for researching and sharing that information with my friends. What I share may not be perfect from you, but at least you can know it comes from an honest place, from somebody who’s also been through the ringer health-wise.

Tell me, what is your biggest struggle right now with your health? I’d love for you to comment below!

I’m a 34 year old on the autism spectrum who is diabetic with asthma and really bad allergies. I live with my grandma who has COPD and Lupus. We both have arthritis and well living on a budget of $200 a month for food is almost impossible even for a bad diet. I’ve tried to garden but I get direct sunlight front and back of my lil house which kills everything. If that don’t then the weird bi polar Kentucky weather does. We use to grow tomatoes but even that now wont survive. I tried doing a small in door herb garden and my cats ate it. >.< its a struggle. I rescue cats and dogs or well use to before my grandma got sicker and said we needed to stop taking in animals cause she can’t handle tending to then anymore. I have a culinary degree but you never stop learning. I love watching your recipes and learning about stretching what food i do have.

Avoiding sugar and processed foods. It’s really hard to be able to eat healthy when eating healthy foods are expensive. Getting older, I have put on weight. Motivation to exercise has been a struggle as well.

      Hi there,
I’ve been a diabetic for the past 25 years so I’ve been interested in food which will benefit me in any way. One of the problems I have is I’m in A unit where I have a small garden. My designated garden has almost no sunshine any time of the day — summer or winter.
I cannnot have a couple of chickens that is part of my leasing agreement. For all the world it’s like the deck is really stacked against me. My daughter keeps 6-8 chickens and she keeps me in some lovely free range eggs. She isn’t well and doesn’t keep a regular garden but has a fairly good herbal garden. I really enjoy fresh herbs, but I cannot eat any chillies, capsicum is fine but nothing more.
Lettuce and tomatoes are always a good treat.
I do not have any Cancer issues — that I know of.

I am hoping you can help me educate myself about Arthritis in my back, asthma, getting stronger ( I am so weak most the time due to my lungs and I get thrust in my mouth from Inhales and breathing treatments! I found some ideas on internet seem to be help! I read your story, really enjoy! I even read about your goats because I grew up country girl and farming grandparents with cows, pigs, and horses! I didn’t check because my husband and I are retired and living in nice Condo for older folks due to health issues! But we miss having place to plant garden! Yet we are blessed to be close to Amish Community were we can get healthy food!

    Hi!!
I have been dealing with back issues since I hurt my back in 2010. The next year I had a back fusion, then again in 2016 and now another this friday. Is so hard to do anything physically because it causes so much pain. But me being the stubborn person I am I do it anyway and pay for it later! ? I would love a few ideas to eat healthy and eat things that do not cause inflammation. Love your videos !! They make me smile at all the animal antics!

After reading other folks comments, I guess my issues are petty. Have struggled with IBS-D for 30 years, grateful for Imodium to be able to participate in life. At 68, overweight by a lot, widowed for 15 years, and never enjoyed cooking or exercising, I find motivation is pretty much nonexistent much of the time. Live in a tiny condo with limited space for container gardening but do enjoy piddling with it….when the deer and bunnies don’t visit ? Your videos are bright spots in my days, and that pond is the most awesome thing I’ve seen!

      Hi Lisa-
Without knowing your complete and entire medical history and talking with your medical team, there is no way I can give you specific advice on what to eat and protect your health at the same time. The best option is to explore a functional medical doctor that can work with the conventional doctors you have now. The Chris Kresser institute has some very useful information on functional medicine, diets for health, and kidney issues. This article is a good place to start and may help you find what you need: https://kresserinstitute.com/gut-kidney-axis/

I hope you find your way to better health and are able to enjoy each and every day.
      Best wishes!

My son’s and my weight and well-being is my main focus. I think the bare-bones of a healthy weight is eating whole, real food. I have been lazy about cooking and have turned to fast-foods and restaurants too often. Next easiest is processed convenience food which I’ve also fallen back on way too much. I want to make sure everything we’re eating is giving us something. I’ve also just started a new life as a divorcee and want to be financially in control and building a nest egg, so scratch cooking is also a means to that end. I’d LOVE to have a farm with a dairy cow and chickens, but even in rural KS, they don’t allow that in town!

Since becoming a widow four years ago, I find it difficult to be motivated to cook for myself. I have been cheating with quick to prepare, packaged foods. I was a dedicated mom and wife who took pride in cooking food from fresh product. I want to get back on track.

My husband and I are in our early 50’s and want to stay healthy and active for many years to come. We both have felt tired, and worn out, I’m gaining weight, and we both have joint pain! We know that processed foods are the main culprit. I can’t believe the junk we put in our bodies, on our bodies, and use in our home. It’s time to stop the madness! Ready to turn over a new leave and thrive, not just exist!

I’m exhausted… I seem to be getting less energetic by the day. I am not overweight and we eat a clean real food diet.

Meal plans that are real food/easy/tasty are a struggle. I can’t have fresh veggies or red meat (allergy) and I can’t stand sea food. It gets old eating the same things over and over each week. My husband is currently on a congestion cleansing diet with no soft dairy, no commercial wheat (but my spelt is okay), and no sugar (we don’t have sugar anyway, except chocolate chips).

I had my second baby 7 months ago and I’m dealing with fatigue, low energy, mood swings, and I’m addicted to sugar. Sugar gives me a boost and always tastes amazing and makes me happy. I know it’s making everything worse. It’s either “the” culprit or #2 offender, but I’m afraid to give it up. I probably have low iron and low vitamin B and D as well. We’re super poor so it’s hard to shell out money for supplements that won’t even work that well but equally hard to force myself to eat a vegetable instead of some chocolate chips. I would love to eat and buy everything organic and healthy and I do try, but the work that goes into making healthy meals compared to say, a peanut butter sandwich, sometimes takes more physical and mental energy than I have available. It’s also tough when you know what’s right but can’t muster up the strength or money to do it. Baby steps though! First step is to start soaking flour so I can make our own bread instead of buying crap from the store!

I have lost almost 50 #s; am having vein restoration surgery on both legs; rotator cuff repaired soon; hoping the leg surgery will help the neuropathy in my feet. Taking NatureThroid for thyroid.

By biggest struggle right now is, having just escaped a very abusive second marriage and reconciled with my first husband and our daughter, I find myself dealing with widespread cancer and a lot of pain which is very hard on them too. I know some about eating and living healthier but they do not so it’s a major learning and growth process for all three of us, changing for the better anf trying to get well together as they have health issues too, for which they rely on pharmaceuticals but are willing to look at better options.

Thanks for asking. It’s nice to share with someone who’s been through some stuff.

My greatest health struggle is managing my eating habits. I tend to go through cycles of eating junk food, then getting sick, then eating more healthy to re-balance.
I live in an apartment, so I don’t have the ability to garden, but I hope to change that next year. I dream of having a garden to eat from. In the mean time, I have local farm sources to use.

My mother and I have been slowly transitioning to eating better and almost all organic. The more we read the more we realize we could be doing. We have really been wanting to try things like, fermenting veggies, making are own kombucha, making foods with a yeast starter kit we bought a few months ago. We have yet to try any of this even though we’ve been talking about it for months. I think we are lacking confidence and finding the time. I have three small children and I not able to spend a ton of time in the kitchen.

Honestly, I don’t enjoy cooking. So I try to find sources that can prepare me the types of food that I love: organic and vegetarian. My health is good and energy too.

Hi, My biggest struggle is this disease I have “Fabry” In a nutshell it attacks heart, kidneys, stomach issues, hearing loss, pain all over your body, especially hands and feet. The infusion that I get every two weeks slows down the disease but there is No cure for it at this time….The drug that I get infused can cause weight gain and my doctor just put me on a medicine (gabapentin) that can also cause weight gain… I have edema in my legs, ankles and it hurts to walk…My life is too busy to take care of me…and I need to make time for me cuz when I get sick…it messes with everything cuz I kinda do everything for everybody.
I have a friend that has a “farm”….Well chickens, goats, turkeys, etc. I do get fresh eggs, and goat milk from her. I try to make “healthy choices’ but a lot of times I fail cuz I’m just too busy or the pain just limits me to what I can do…I found your site while looking for something for our dog that has seizures and I’m really glad I found you…Very interesting videos and advice…Thank You

I have struggled for years with hypothyroidism and lots of its related symptoms – but mostly, depression, lethargy, arthritis, weight gain, etc. I wish I felt like moving but I sit. I wish I felt like cooking but I don’t. I wish I felt like seeing friends but I avoid being around people. ……. I do like to spend a lot of time dreaming about what I would do – if I just felt like it. Thanks to your website, I can imagine all kinds of things I would love to do when I feel better – mostly, sourcing and cooking real food. But I also love to just look into the life of someone who is doing something I will never do like raising goats or chickens – fascinating! Keep up the good work – whatever that is for you as long as it leads you to peace!
