Essential Oils Controversy: Who the heck is right?

The newest health controversy is all about essential oils. What's a natural foodie to do?

Essential Oils are a hot topic right now.

And with any hot topic, you’ll find some extreme opinions on both sides. Some people think essential oils can heal every single disease (not true),while others think if you’re in the same room with essential oils, you pretty much need a doctor present (also not true).

Which opinion is right?

Well, I can tell you one thing, controversy in the health world isn’t new. Every time I read a blog post about essential oils (and I notice it’s an extreme opinion), I can’t help but think to myself, “Was this written for shock value to draw traffic? What kind of ad revenue is this generating? What’s the author’s agenda? Is this person an aromatherapist upset about the fact that regular, everyday people are sharing tips?”

Maybe it’s the blogger in me, but I’ve been trained to see past the words into the reason why the blog post was written in the first place.

And then there’s Facebook.

The funny thing about viral posts on Facebook is they all have one thing in common: They are viral because they invoke EMOTION in the sharer. Whether it be anger, indignation, or elation, the sharer needs to feel it before they will share. There’s also another neat thing about people in general. We like to be the first to share things. This is why you’ll have some friends tell everybody about the latest health scare, event, or celebrity death within minutes. It’s usually the same people each time. You know who I’m talking about. 😉

I should say that there are some really great AUTHENTIC bloggers out there. I’ve met some amazing bloggers who really strive to write what they believe in and help others as well. They may still make money through traffic on their blogs, but they really do care about the reader. And then I’ve met… other bloggers.

Fear Mongering vs. Common Sense

I totally get that there have been people who have been harmed by essential oils… when they apply a whole bottle of an essential oil to their bodies.

Being in the health world, I’ve seen a lot of articles about things being bad or good. In fact, my friend Matt Stone can tell you from memory about what’s bad AND good in EVERY SINGLE FOOD. It’s hilarious and confusing at the same time. His potato dialogue is awesome.

So, whenever I hear that a food is bad, or that an essential oil will cause the zombie apocalypse, I take it with a grain of salt. I try to step back and think logically about the situation, and I really try not to get emotionally involved.

Having a good dose of common sense on the matter doesn’t hurt either. 😉

What do the experts REALLY say about essential oils?

The Essential Oils Revolution Summit was from May 11-18, 2015, but you can still get the recordings if you missed it! It has a FANTASTIC lineup of experts on the subject of essential oils and it helps us dispel some of the controversy surrounding them!

I spoke at the summit on the subject of muscular discomfort and what worked for me. I don’t claim to be an expert on all things essential oils, but I’ve studied and learned a lot over the years, both in research and application, and my hope is you’ll be able to learn from my experience!

ABOUT DANELLE

DaNelle started to take an interest in a healthier lifestyle after suffering from two debilitating chronic diseases. On a mission to create a farm of her own, DaNelle forced, or rather 'lovingly persuaded' her husband to purchase a ranch home on an acre of land and transform it into their very own urban farm. DaNelle blogs at Weed 'em & Reap where she writes about the sustainable backyard farming, traditional food, & natural remedies.

I think it’s important to note that everyone can have a different reaction to them, just as with any medicine. I know people that have had them work wonders for their children and I believe them. I’ve also been in the er with my infant son who had a bad reaction. For me, the fear comes from not knowing. But I truly believe that everyone should do what works best for them.

      Hi George-
It is always nice to have information isn’t it? So yep, DaNelle does include information on various topics in her articles, etc., or links in a lot of informative articles and videos. Sometimes though, she is trying to keep what she write concise and not go into info overload. Since you are interested in learning more about essential oils here is a link to a great article DaNelle wrote: https://www.weedemandreap.com/best-brand-essential-oils/
If you want to learn about a whole range of essential oils topics check about all that she has written on the subject: https://www.weedemandreap.com/category/essential-oils/
As for the sales link, she is just trying to get people to the good products with little fuss and muss. She honestly believes in those products and wants you to be able to find them.
So happy you are really into the oils! I hope this helps and you enjoy the oils! -Bobbi (DaNelle’s Assistant)
