Nutella Under Fire in Court: Consumers win $3 million

I really hate to be the bearer of bad news, folks.  Honestly.  I know how incredibly, deliciously, insanely enticing Nutella can be.  I know that Nutella has quickly become a staple in the American household in the last 2 years.  I wish I could tell you YES! Buy a year's supply! Use it in those homemade cookies of yours! Eat it everyday. -- but I can't.

If I remember right, I think I bought this only one time, before I made the switch to real food and subsequently lost 25 lbs.  Once I started really looking at labels, I knew that I couldn't put this in my cart. Hey, I'm all for chocolate, especially chocolate & nuts --- mmmm.  But sometimes we gotta take a stand, and I'm here to tell you why.

Nutella can seem like a healthy food on the outside.  I mean, the ingredients seem simple enough -- milk, nuts, sugar.  Harmless, right?  Even the commercials advertise Nutella as part of a "healthy, nutritious breakfast".

Mom in the commercial says, "My kids love the taste, and I feel good that they're ready to tackle the day."

Not so commercial Mom, not so.

The health claims by Nutella's commercial came underfire in the California courts in April 2012.  A mom argued that she was convinced from the commercial that Nutella was healthy for her child, and therefore fed Nutella to her child.

Aside from the fact that this mom should have probably known better, she is right about one thing -- Nutella definitely is NOT part of a healthy breakfast.  Or a healthy anything.

Dangers of Nutella:

SUGAR - There are 21 grams of sugar in 2 TBS of Nutella.  That's as much as a Kit Kat!  That's as much as 12 pieces of Tootsie Rolls!  And on top of that, it's not even real sugar.  It's genetically-modified beet sugar also known as "really cheap so us corporations can make a big profit, also full of pesticides and DNA-altered so your body doesn't recognize it" SUGAR.  This kind of sugar is a NEUROTOXIN.   Neurotoxins are toxins that have the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier. They cause cell death in the brain and exacerbate a myraid of issues namely ADD, ADHD, Autism, Aspergers, depression, anxiety, migraines, etc. Looking for REAL SUGAR?  See where I buy mine here.

SOY LETHICIN - Oh soy, how doth I explain thee?  Okay, ya'll I will just come out and say it.  SOY AIN'T GOOD FOR YOU!  Soy is known to cause thyroid depression, weight gain, malaise, constipation, delayed menstruation, and ultimately, breast cancer.  Soy stimulates existing cancer growth, accelerates the onset of puberty, lowers your testosterone, and decreases fertility.  Yeah, not gonna be your friend, that soy. Some people argue that soy is consumed by Asian cultures often so it must be good for us.  The truth is that Asian cultures actually only eat small amounts of fermented, organic soy as a condiment and not NEARLY in the AMOUNT it is packaged and fed to Americans today.  Also, the soy grown here is almost always GMO soy.

PALM OIL - Palm oil in fact is a very healthy saturated fat, and a great addition to one's diet.  BUT, with the demand of palm oil has come the downside of how it is being obtained.  Deforestation and orangutan extinction is why you must make sure that the palm oil you purchase comes from sustainable sources. Check out where I get my palm oil.

VANILLIN -  "No artificial colors or preservatives" the commercial states.  "Oh, but we conveniently forgot to mention there is an artificial flavor.  No biggie."  Actually, it's a BIG biggie Mr. Nutella man.  Vanillin is an artificial flavoring meant to "trick" your brain into thinking you're tasting real vanilla.  But you're not.  Your brain is confused, vanillin wins the battle, and kicks you while you're down by crossing the blood-brain barrier as a neurotoxin and taking out a couple of brain cells while he's there.  Also, Vanillin is EXTREMELY addicting.  It bonds with receptors in your brain, causing a release of serotonin, or the "feel good" hormones.  This is why you see pictures like this all over the internet.

Nutella Crack

SKIM MILK - Oh man, don't even get me started on skim milk.  When I say skim milk you probably picture a beautiful milk maid setting fresh milk on the counter in a stainless steel pail and every so gently, removing the cream.  Uh, yeah, not even close.  In the skim milk in Nutella you've got some pus-filled milk from sick cows being fed hormones and GMOs and antibiotics and candy and who knows what, then the milk is highly pasteurized, then forced through a homogenizer, then fortified with some synthetic stuff so you feel good about getting some vitamins that your body can't utilize anyway, then since the milk looks and tastes like water, they'll add some powdered milk, which is chock full of oxidized cholesterol, one of the most dangerous forms of cholesterol out there.  Whew.  This milk maid needs a nap.  If you wanna read more about what I really think about milk, check out my post Is Low-fat dairy making you FAT?

Hey commercial mom, you still feelin' good about how Nutella makes your kids ready to "tackle the day."?  More like ready to tackle more Nutella when they get home.

Don't worry, I'm not gonna leave you without a good Nutella alternative. I have an awesome recipe for ya' right here...Quick Homemade Nutella.

So, make the choice to say NO to Nutella for your family!  And trust me, your family will be better off without it!

  1. Can I be honest? I've never liked the stuff, though I love the chocolate and hazelnut combo. Maybe my body knew before my brain did. Either way, I'm more than happy to avoid it. :) Thanks for the write up on it, helping me justify my position against it...not that I needed it, but it's nice to have the back-up! :)

  2. I buy an organic chocolate hazelnut butter from Tierra Farm. I believe it is just organic chocolate, hazelnuts, and salt. I always thought Nutella was too oily, guess it was the palm oil.

  3. yummie, not matter what others say! Most of our food these days contains dangerous stuff. Just because it says organic on the outside, doesn't mean it has organic in the inside. Just keep a close look how eggs are made. Organic eggs are not from a farm where hens are running around in freedom <- even if most ppl think!
Better stop with everything :) just breeze and drink water. Well, even then you have to be careful. Air is dangerous too. Contains a lot of dust, dirt etc ;)

    1. Not so with certified organic. :) And I think your "humor" is actually a rant. ;-) I used to feel like you until I opened my mind, changed our diet, and watched my family transform from a adhd-stricken mob to a calm, happy crowd. :) Everyone who knows us is shocked.

    2. Amen Amy Lou!! We were able to avoid meds for my oldest for ADHD, ODD, depression & Tourette's & I was able to get off my antidepressants & ADHD meds just by removing all artificial additives (artificial colors/dyes, artificial flavors, artificial sweeteners & artificial preservatives) from our diet. We also avoid all GMO and eat mostly organic to avoid all the chemical pesticides/fertilizers. My family is so much healthier & happier now, and med free. www.ADHDdiet.org

  4. Certified organic is okay and being knowledgeable about where you food comes from takes a lot of work. Eggs are produced in many ways. I was reading this page once and it really help me understand more about them. If the label says organic, it just means they are fed with organic feed. If it says 'free range" that means that they are not kept in cages all the time.

    1. Cage free=confined to any area but not in a cage and are fed ????. Free-range are outside and fed ????. Pastured and organic are ideal because they eat green stuff + organic feed + are free to waddle unimpeded.

  6. people just need to start reading labels, the sugar content alone should have been a red flag even if they never heard of the bad of soy or they don't know what GMO is. i'm so discusted by people these days. i've been on a health journey for a 2 years now and have learned so much but even before that i knew that tons of sugar, sat fat, and sodium was not good for me. and did not ingest sodas or processed foods. and now that i'm mostly raw and vegan i see the folks don't care about what they put in their mouths.

  10. Most of our food nowadays contain lots of "crap".Nutella is just another.I would love for our family to be able to eat organic, but it cost a FORTUNE ! I went to buy an organic chicken the other day and it cost $12.81 ??? So,what can we do ?...What we need is for the government to regulate our food contents a little bit more,so us "poor folk" can be healthier !!Just saying folks...NOT EVERYONE CAN AFFORD TO SHOP AND EAT ORGANIC !!

  11. What is different about the chemical structure of the sucrose extracted from GMO beets and the sucrose extracted from non-GMO beets? I would like to know why you think these chemically identical compounds behave differently in the body?

    Thanks

  12. Anonymous, you're so right! I try to eat as healthfully as possible, but the very diet that we're told to follow, is filled with many high-priced items, sometimes out of reach for some middle-class consumers. (we should have easier access to good food/health, since we're the ones holding everything togetheraround here!)I just try to keep it simple; very little processed food, meat once a week, veggies, fruits, whole grains, etc...We are slowly being poisoned, no doubt, because no care is put into anything anymore; it's all about money. So you have to just be aware, careful, moderate, and keep it simple!
I bought a store brand (America's Choice)version of nutella. The ingredients seem less scary (but, who knows??) and are as follows: sugar, still high but 19g instead of 20g; palm and rapeseed oils; hazelnuts; low fat cocoa powder;skimmed milk powder;lactose; sunflower LECITHIN - NOT 'lethicin', as labeled in above article; vanilla. I wonder if this is an alternative I can stick with...

  14. Correct eating is just another religion - and you all are just followers and believers - if something is more dangerous than bad food, it´s histerical pc-popes who make you anxious, and suffer even more from the panic that you evolve, than from the stuff you shouldn´t eat...
who´s the devil? the devil is us all! we all decide about what we eat and should be responsible on our own for what we chose and no longer make others responsible for our decisions! why the fuck, du people cheat themselves by pretending, they didn´t know, that sugar and fat in higher doses is not healthy for you? for anybody?

  15. yeah don't eat it! More for me!

  16. European Nutella is much different from AMerican made Nutella. THats where ad agency pulls the idea from. ask anybody from Europe about the taste and they will tell you that US product is way too sweet and not even close to what is sold there.
