It took me a while to get up the courage to write this post. I didn't quite want to say my son is CURED of asthma even though we haven't had to use any inhalers or steroids for over a year now. Saying any chronic illness is "CURED" is pretty bold and I felt like "REVERSED" was a much better word. Could my son still have the tendency for asthma? Will he have a flare-up in the future? Maybe. But right here, right now he's doing amazing. And I wanted to share his story...
The Merry-Go-Round {also known as healthcare}:
It took 6 months of doctor's visits before my son was officially diagnosed with asthma. At 2 years old, after any amount of physical exertion he would become tired & flushed, complain of a tummy ache, start to cough, then throw up. It happened like clockwork.
Our family doctor wanted to focus on the tummy ache and recommended a pediatric gastroenterologist who recommended a endoscopy to rule out any serious digestive ailment. After the endoscopy, we were sent away with a clean bill of health and a "shrug of the shoulders" diagnosis. The only clue we had was that the anesthesiologist who assisted in the endoscopy told us that he noticed our son didn't have very good "lungs", not to mention some pretty massive tonsils. He recommended we "check that out" as well. We went away from these string of experiences with a big fat question mark.
"Thanks a heap doc! How much do I owe ya?"
Our only solution was to restrict physical activity. Poor kid. Let's just say we had a lot of indoor fun time. Not very healthy, but as young parents we thought we were doing best.
We noticed the wheezing and coughing and subsequent vomiting would happen also when he got a cold. One time the wheezing & coughing got so bad that we were introduced by our doctor to the NEBULIZER also known as the SPECIAL MACHINE in our family.
Over the course of 6 years I have literally spent hours up in the night administering NEBULIZER meds to my son.
After the 3rd or 4th cold & round of prescriptions, I kid you not, my doctor said, "Well, let's just officially say your son has asthma. But don't worry. Every kid has asthma these days. He'll fit right in."
From my nursing background I was able to use my stethoscope to assess his wheezes and coughs. This helped so much because I could assess his breathing before administering meds. I believe EVERY parent should own a stethoscope and learn how to use one. You will be able to tell the difference between a cough and wheezing and effectively reduce unnecessary medication.
Sickness teaches & Nutrition heals:
When MY OWN quest for health began and I started to turn away from western medicine and look to nutrition for health, my eyes were opened to a whole new way of living and healing.
Ever so gradually, I made changes to our family's diet.
A diet of full of...regular meat, eggs, cow's milk & cheese, white flour, white sugar, vegetable oils, soda, fast food, fishy crackers & fruit snacks turned into...
a diet full of...no hormone meat, organic eggs, raw goat's milk but still pasteurized cow's cheese, whole grains, part refined sugars & part honey, healthier vegetable oils, soda only 1 x week, fast food 1 x week, & fruit leather turned into...
a diet full of...organic meat, organic eggs, raw goat's milk & raw goat cheese with only occasional pasteurized cow's cheese, whole grains prepared properly, only honey & sucanat, organic butter, lard, coconut, olive oil, no soda, homemade broths, rarely ever fast food, & fresh seasonal fruits & vegetables, fermented cod liver oil. Read more about our current diet HERE
I was so obsessed with my own healing that it took time for me to notice that my son wasn't having anymore attacks. At first I thought it was because he wasn't getting as sick. There really weren't a lot of colds or flus in our house anymore, and if there were, they were very short 1-2 days at most.
At my son's 8 year old checkup, our pediatrician recommended a flu vaccine. Although I did vaccinate my children as babies, I now do not vaccinate at all and I told the pediatrician we would pass. He promptly told me that if my son got this year's flu that we would literally be in the hospital. His history of asthma, he said, was too risky to skip the flu shot. I again declined and he told me I just sealed my fate.
Thanks a heap doc, how much do I owe ya'?
{I would like to say that I am not totally against doctors. I have a very good medical background and also believe there are some amazing docs out there. This one just wasn't one of 'em}
Well, the doctor was right about one thing. My little Ethan did get the flu. And it was no fun for about 4 days. But guess what else? He did not get one wheeze or cough or even a hiccup. He had a fever and felt yucky, but that lovely nebulizer stayed stored in the medicine cabinet where it still sits today.
We've gone a year now without any asthma meds (except for that time that Ethan became flushed at a soccer game and I freaked out and made him take a puff of albuterol even though he said he was fine and not wheezing at all)
The biggest change that I believe REVERSED my son's asthma:
I noticed a significant reduction in my son's asthma when we made the switch to raw goat's milk. Actually, that was one of the major reasons we decided to raise and milk goats. Since goat's milk has smaller protein & fat globules, it digests easier in about 30 min. compared with cow's milk, which digests in about 3 hours. He had a lot less phlegm from drinking goat's milk and I believe it helped with his asthma. Phlegm = inflammatory response. (You may think this milk sensitivity was just a tendency in my son, but in fact, MANY asthmatic children have undiagnosed milk sensitivities allergies & improve greatly on raw milk see Sources)
For a couple months when our goats were dry and we had to purchase milk, we bought raw cow's milk and he did fine on that too. When we decided to buy some store bought organic, (but pasteurized & homogenized) cow's milk, I noticed right away him coughing and even I felt like I personally had a stuffy nose and phlegm in my throat. (Homogenization makes the globules even bigger and harder to digest) You can read more about how I feel about milk here.
What I think made the asthma go away all together was our huge reduction in processed foods. I don't purchase any processed food anymore, although being kids, they get some probably a couple times a month from some soccer game or birthday party or grandma's sleepover. I let them make their own decision whether or not to partake because I don't believe in depriving them.
I am confident that as we continue with our Traditional Whole Food's lifestyle, continue to drink raw milk and avoid processed foods as much as possible, that my son will completely be cured from asthma.
My son went from needing an inhaler & steroid everyday, to only needing it when he was sick or during physical activity, to never needing it. So take it from me, nutrition can reverse and heal! I hope this inspires other moms out there who spend their nights up with that nebulizer that it CAN get better. Just try to educate yourself and be brave enough to make changes to your family's diet because a little change can go a long way!
You can drink raw cow's, goat's(only the breed Nigeran Dwarfs taste just like cow's milk), or even sheep's milk!(Yes, I've tried it and it's amazing--and I'm super picky!) If you're worried about raw milk, (which I was too when I first made the switch), know that there are millions of raw milk drinkers out there that do perfectly fine and haven't once got sick from the milk! We personally keep our milk very clean and healthy as do MANY raw milk farmers! If you're interested in searching for a raw milk source near you, then go to the Real Milk Finder.
I wish you the best and remember, changing your family's diet happens one step at a time but small changes can bring about great miracles!

Amazing story! Thank you so much for sharing it! Some day, I'd love it if you'd share this with my readers on Fibro, Fit and Fab! It would be such an encouragement! I believe that food plays a LOT bigger picture in our health than people want to admit, and this just cements it even further to me. Let me know if you'd be interested in sharing this with my readers some time, and we'll see what we can work out. :)
ReplyDeleteHave a great day!
Great, thanks!
DeleteIts my pleasure to tell you that your article has fascinated me getting USA Payday loans. You are into a wonderful work. Keep the spirit high.
DeleteYou can get easy and secure payday loan in USA with low interest.
That's a wonderful story! So great to hear! :)
ReplyDeleteMaybe we'll have to switch over to a more traditional diet (we're eating somewhat traditional now, but could soak/sprout our wheat/spelt and drink raw milk). What do you eat during the day to keep the diet more frugal?
I would love to have nigerian dwarf goats too! This is one of my goals. :) We have enough room to have one or two in the backyard, but will be selling our house soon.
Eating seasonal fruits & vegetables and grains/broth really reduce our costs the most! Goats are SO easy, you'd love it!
DeleteThe more I read your blog, the more I feel like I need to move next door to you so I can buy your goats' milk and your chickens' eggs! And I can be the bread-maker! Haha. I could probably raise my own goats and chickens but it would be a huge change for me. I suppose if I should learn anything from your experiences it's that I, too, can be a backyard homesteader. I just need the right house first!
ReplyDeleteHow 'bout we just stick a tent in the backyard for ya? You husband would be cool with that, right? Let's do it!
DeleteWe are not totally where you are diet wise. This past summer we did make a switch to real food, cut out processed. I have totally noticed a difference in my TWO children who were both diagnosed with asthma at a young age. Theirs was never exercise induced more cold and allergy induced. But now, no NEB since last winter. No inhaler for my son and only maybe once for my daughter. What you eat really does makes a difference!!
ReplyDeleteIt does make a difference! I'm glad I'm not the only one!
Deletemy daughter is 11 and has asthma...we have changed our diets to wholesome foods no processed, she had a bad winter and used her inhaler more and hasnt work, now she is using claritin which iam not happy about but i dont know what to do for her i hate giving her medications but dont like to see her having trouble breathing. cant find raw milk where i live need help please what else can i do to help her.
ReplyDeleteHave you thought of cutting out dairy all together and replacing her fat soluble vitamins with Fermented Cod Liver Oil? Here's a great article on it...
Deletehttp://www.cheeseslave.com/why-fermented-cod-liver-oil/
Great story...You should look up Epidemic Answers ..they are doing a documentary on this...healing 7 families who have anything from severe eczema to asthma to autism..check it out write about it and encourage your family, friends and fans donate to see it come to life!
ReplyDeleteI did the same with my 5 year old son...I did not vaccinate or give him any meds...I was lucky to have a ped that walked me down this path of healing...many nights of rocking and moving from room to room trying to keep him calm so he could breathe...we are asthma free at age 5
Thanks for the tip, I'll check into that! And I'm happy your son is asthma-free too!
DeleteLove your story...my daughter was diagnosed with asthma and through diet and chiropractic measures, she is doing great:-) i too had a doctor tell me after not wanting to give my daughter the flu vaccine, "you don't want her to die." I kept my sense of humor and eternally wrote her off as a doctor...
ReplyDeleteLove this!
DeleteIsn't it amazing how much food has to do with our health? I wish it had not taken me until 30 years old with two special needs kids to learn this important lesson, but there it is! And there are lots of people still trying to keep that info under wraps, but they can't shut us up! :) Keep preaching it, and so will I. Love your blog!
ReplyDeleteThank you! I totally agree!
DeleteDanelle, my own personal story is similar but with a few differences. I acquired allergies and asthma when I was about 35 years old. I now can trace it back to after receiving a flu shot. Soon after I was suddenly allergic to cats and dogs after having them my whole life. I then started to have asthma attacks often and was tested for IgE allergies which showed no food allergies. I started reading books on nutrition and in "The Makers Diet" read that raw goats milk helped with asthma. I bought two milking Nigerian goats and consumed raw milk for years. My asthma never did get better. Then I met a nutritionist that suggested I be tested for IgG Food Antibodies. I was highly intolerant of the casein in milk, eggs and beef. I eliminated all three from my diet and now five years later I am asthma free and went from taking several medications to taking nothing. After finding out about the dairy intolerance I went back to my doctor and was tested again for IgE dairy and eggs. That test showed nothing. I told him of the IgG test results and he dismissed the results. You see, he is now out a customer and that is why allergy docs don't support the IgG testing. By eliminating the foods I no longer need him or his medications. I still have my goats, they are pets now. But feel great and don't get sick like I used to either. Nutrition can cure everything. I am convinced of it.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great story! And now I have a new Nigerian buddy, haha!
DeleteI've had a similar situation myself. In the summer of 2010 I was selling handmade items at a farmer's market and was given so much leftover produce that I decided to incorporate them into our diet and started participating in Meatless Mondays. I also noticed that I felt congested every time I had milk, so I switched to almond milk. From there I started taking more steps to a whole food, plant heavy diet. For the past few years I have not had 6 months of chronic bronchitis, no more asthma, we have not gotten the flu only an occasional head cold that lasts a day or two and is very minor, we've lost weight, and the icing on the cake came when I gave up gluten three months ago and my daily migraines and fibromyalgia are now almost completely gone. It's amazing how much more energy I have and I'm on a normal sleep schedule that I was never able to keep before.
ReplyDeleteAwesome, have you ever thought of the GAPS diet? I know some people who cure their gluten sensitivities with it.
DeleteI feel like I was reading my own story with my daughter!! We too switched to raw (cow's) milk from a wonderful organic farmer. Within 3 DAYS of starting on it, I noticed her cough (or constant clearing her throat) was GONE! GONE...in 3 days! I didn't really believe it though and when that gallon of raw milk ran out, I bought store milk. 3 days later she was back to coughing (that is her symptom...not wheezing but coughing). So we switched and haven't looked back. And today has been 1 year and 8 days since we last used any allergy or asthma meds. For me that is after 8+ years on Zyrtec, albuterol and finally, several years on Singulair. And that was STILL getting a respiratory illness every 2-3 months! For my daughter, that meant 7 years of getting sick every 2-3 months and the last 2-3 on zyrtec and on and off albuterol and they were thinking of starting her on Singulair. It was ridiculous. And I am happy to report we made it through 2012 without a SINGLE respiratory illness. It is nothing short of a miracle!!! Can't wait to read more of your story!
ReplyDeleteWhat amazing success!
DeleteThank you for sharing this story! :) I had similar success with my son. In a recent visit to the pediatrician, the idea of our cleaner eating and homeopathy being the catalyst for the "reverse" was dismissed. It was suggested that my son "outgrew it." Perhaps. But, we'll stick with the cleaner eating. :) So thankful for what we are learning!
ReplyDeleteWe have had the same thing x 3 kids happen here...it is so wonderful, and I love not having the nebs, inhalers, Prednizone and countless antibiotics anymore. Going on two years here with my son who had moderate asthma not having so much as a sniffle. Good for you...and keep on going! My 3 year old and I have been on GAPS for almost a year - we had a little more stubborn issues...but the same wonderful healing has been finally taking place... We too are so thankful. :-)
ReplyDeleteHeather
I had asthma for over 40 years. For the last 30+ years I was using two medications daily to control wheezing. I had tried acupuncture, homeopathy, herbs, etc. Nothing made any difference. But when I eliminated gluten the wheezing completely disappeared. When I gave up all grains, my seasonal hay fever and chronic tendinitis also disappeared! The GAPS diet has done wonders for me!
ReplyDeleteYAY for GAPS diet! I hear so many amazing stories from GAPS people!!
DeleteGreat story! We healed my son's eczema years ago by taking him off pasteurized cow's milk, so I've seen allergic issues heal with simple changes as well. And good call passing on that flu shot! We've done a ton of research on it and have discovered that there are no good, independent scientific studies that demonstrate its effectiveness anyway! According to the Cochrane Collaborative (widely considered the gold standard of independent scientific research and reviews), in average conditions, for every 100 flu vaccinations only 1, at most, set of flu symptoms is avoided! You would have had him pumped full of a lot of toxins for nothing.
ReplyDeleteWow, that's amazing! I'm so glad we didn't give the flu shot.
DeleteThis is SO fantastic! What a gift of good health for your son! It sounds a whole lot like my story (asthma, milk, etc.), but he's about 20 years younger than I was when I discovered the problem. Just curious - It sounds like you soak whole grains now. Does he ever have trouble with soaked/sprouted wheat? My asthma definitely improved when we switched to raw milk, but it still flares up when I've had too much wheat (even soaked). Have you noticed anything like that in your family?
ReplyDeleteAgain, I think he will look back as an adult and be SO thankful for the changes you helped him make in his diet at a young age that are sparing him from a lifetime of asthma. Go super-mom you! :)
As long as we soak or sprout I don't notice anything, but once we start eating white flour and grains not prepared properly I hear him coughing more.
DeleteSo much appreciate reading all of this. I have a story but will skip it because it is so similar to all these I am reading. What I would like to add is about wheat. I would highly recommend giving it up...I have and my rewards have been great. Read the book by William Davis, MD, titled "Wheat Belly". My results have been that I have reversed diabetes, type II, asthma, and eczema. Our food today is literally killing us. If you don't know about GMOs, please educate yourselves. My husband and I raise our own food organically and for the biggest part that is what we eat. Anything I buy at the grocery is organic and whole. For milk, I make almond milk. I refuse to eat any of these additives these days. Turmeric is a must in my home as is ginger and garlic. It is such a blessing to read all these comments and the article itself to know that I am not alone.
DeleteGreat story! We are on the same road. My 7 year old hasnt used his inhaler or nebulizer in over a year. I credit our whole food diet and also chemical free(almost) home. I wish I could get raw milk here in Md but it is illegal:(
ReplyDeleteMy 7yo was raised on a whole foods/ NT diet and raw milk as well as kefir, and heck, breastfed til he was 3.5. Our diet isn't flawless, but for the most part is very nutrient dense and fully organic, often local, free of processed foods, etc. He still has asthma, albeit not terribly. When we took food sensitivity tests, he came up as positive to dairy, so we cut dairy out entirely, even the raw and fermented kind. He hasn't really improved at all, and in fact now needs symbicort during winter months now. I think it's a bit discouraging to many to think things can be totally reversed via nutrition. We have what we have, genetics wise. We can work with it. I don't feel we can make all conditions disappear. My son's daily life has never been impacted by his asthma though, and he mostly just needs his albuterol and flovent with colds. I do feel that it could have been worse, perhaps far worse, if he weren't fed a nutrition diet.
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy that your son is better! I actually found this blog because my cat has asthma and I am convinced it is from something I am feeding her so I will be changing her food to all organic. I recently became vegan and learned that so many of today's health problems are linked to a diet too high in meat and dairy (cancer, heart disease, diabetes). I also learned there is a huge myth that we should drink milk because we need calcium for our bones, but actually dairy proteins have an acidic effect on the body and the body uses calcium to neutralize the effects of this which leads to a net calcium loss. I had a milk allergy when I was a kid and haven't drank it since but I was shocked to know milk makes osteoporosis worse or even causes it. Healthier alternatives are any number of plant based milks like rice milk, almond milk, and coconut milk. It is not surprising at least 60% of the adult population is lactose intolerant when you think about how nature designed us as mammals and that we should only drink milk as babies. It is best to get your calcium from leafy greens, almonds, brazil nuts, sesame seeds, etc. because these are all alkaline sources of calcium with a great number of other health benefits. Please spread the word, this is a huge lie we have been told! More info can be found here:

I also understand that some people have been cured of cancer by cutting out dairy and meat entirely (vegan) which I think more people should also know about but I also feel going totally organic is the way to go, genetically modified food causes health problems that people are also not being informed about!

Hi Kimberly, thanks for commenting! I actually believe that milk IS in fact good for us. Not for the calcium, but for all the vitamins, nutrients & enzymes including the fat soluble A & D. The lie we have been told is that raw milk will make us sick. Humans have been drinking raw grassfed milk from goats, sheep & cows for thousands of years and I believe the allergies and problems with it today stem from the poorly fed animals and the processing done to our milk. (pasteurization, homogenization, reducing fat)
ReplyDeleteI also agree that God has placed a plentiful amount of plant based foods for us to enjoy! There is so much awesome variety on the earth today!
I believe the problem isn't meat & dairy at all. What is always overlooked is that those cancer patients who cut our meat & dairy also cut out PROCESSED foods. I believe that processed foods are the true cause of cancer today. Eating all kinds of foods (meat, dairy, fruits & vegetables, grains) in their most natural form I believe is the key to true health!
On top of everything, I believe that we all have the inspiration to eat the way we choose! I support anybody on a healthy journey and I hope you find great health & healing!
Thanks so much for sharing your story on this post at SITS Sharefest! We need to decided what is best for each one of us!
ReplyDeleteI must respectfully disagree with your entire case for milk and I hope I will have given you something to think about here. I also have moral reasons for being vegan and I think it is equally important to ask what is best for the animals because they also have rights and free will, they just lack vocal chords to tell you this. It is not a personal choice to eat meat, it is just murder. Animals do not choose to become your food or to give up the milk they made for their babies, this violates their free will. Many people don't even consider that animals have free will and rights, but they definitely do. More and more people are beginning to see this, the sacredness and unity of all of life, and are choosing to eat compassionately.
ReplyDeleteAs far as nutritional benefits of raw milk, you can get plenty of the nutrients and enzymes in plants that you could get from raw milk. In fact, plants exceed raw milk in Vitamin A by a large margin. Vitamin A is in raw milk as 6% of your percent daily value in one cup. In comparison to plant based sources of Vitamin A: a medium sized red pepper has 75%!, average tomato 20%, mango 32%, half a cup of green peas 34%, fortified oatmeal 14%, one cup of 7 grain plant milk 15% and 30% Vitamin D. If you need more Vitamin D, enjoy some sunshine.
Enzymes in raw milk:
1) Amylase - the most commonly found enzyme in plants, particularly abundant in sweet potato, corn and starchy grains like oats, wheat and barley
2) Catalase - also found in potatoes, carrots, wheat sprouts, lentils, sunflower seeds
3) Lactase - not needed by humans
4) Lactoperoxidase - identical to peroxidase found in saliva and gastric juices
5) Lipase - nuts and seeds
6) Phosphatase - citrus fruits, berries, broccoli, cabbage
It is evident you do NOT need milk to survive, Asian cultures do not consume any dairy and they get along just fine!
I believe we must agree to disagree :)
DeleteVitamins A,D,E,& K are all fat-soluble only available in animal sources. Plants only contain proto-vitamin A, and must first be converted to vitamin A by the body to be available for use. Even healthy adults can't do this efficiently, and the young and old may not be able to do this at all.
The Japanese, who have the longest life span of any nation in the world, are not vegan or vegetarian. Although they eat few dairy fats (they do consume some dairy), they eat a significant amount of fat soluble vitamins from eggs, pork, chicken, beef, seafood, and organ meats. They also eat shellfish & fish broth on a daily basis.
A study of over 40,000 Japanese subjects found that over a sixteen-year-period, "those who ate the most eggs, dairy products and fish had a 28% lower risk of stroke than those who ate the least" Ibid., p.24
Coming back from vegetarianism myself, I know that my current traditional diet makes me feel AMAZING! I am no longer hungry, tired & weak. Instead I feel nourished and full of energy!! Since switching back to animal products(raw & grass fed), my cholesterol has gone down, I have lost an additional 10 lbs, and my hormones have stabilized. I'm grateful for all the foods God has placed on earth including the animals that I am able to care for and receive food from.
P.S. I actually own a special breed of goats that can talk. I asked them if they were okay with giving me milk and they were cool with it.
HHAHAHAHA! I love it! We have a cow and I think she's ok with us giving her plenty of hay and silage all winter when there isn't much to eat in the country. We also give her water 3 times a day which she would otherwise have to forage for as it is frozen all winter. We also give her shelter if she wants it or she can go outside whenever she likes. We see to her health as well and all her other needs. We are grateful to her for sharing her wonderful milk and we love her and she loves us. She bellows when she hears my husband get home because she loves him and loves milking time. he brushes her and talks kindly to her and pets her.
DeleteShe just stands there and enjoys the grains and love. It's give-give relationship.
Hahaha, sixgunsue, I'm glad you liked that comment! Like you said, it really is true! Our animals love us! If we'd let them come in the house they'd gladly take us up on the offer. My respect for animals has increased since caring for. And bonus, we get delicious milk!
DeleteI love this story. I healed my daughter as well. When she was 3 years old, she was severely asthmatic, on 5 prescription meds, nebulizer every 4-6 hours every day, had an antibiotic resistant superbug called Klebsiella Pneumonia for 9 months, failure to thrive, and IBS. We lived in crises mode for a year. We never slept. She missed 3 months of school. The more meds she was on, the sicker she became. I took a leap of faith and turned to holistic medicine and nutritional healing. It changed out lives so dramatically that I was once a professional mechanical engineer and I am now a Holistic Health Coach through the Institute of Integrative Nutrition. She never takes prescription drugs now and she is active and thriving. Even better then that, as difficult as it was, our whole family healed in different ways through nutrition. "let food be thy medicine". We can't keep living like this! With love gratitude and aloha, Jenny Mons www.beachesnutritionalwellness.com
ReplyDeleteWow I love this story! And it's amazing how it transformed your entire life too!
DeleteOk, thanks so much for this post, I was linked in via the Elliots. I have been trying to help my daughter with this type of diet for 5 or 6 yrs now and she STILL has asthma. though not as bad, She also is hypothyroid and adrenally fatigued. Part of what i'm dealing with is she is stubborn and is not consistent with her meds. She is also very addicted to sugar. She is adopted as is her little biological sister and they came that way. I have to hide any sweets that we do make in my room or they will eat them all in one day and no one else gets any. I think it's a genetic thing. But we do have a cow and even before that we were on raw milk for years. She gets a tude if I try to push things but I am tired of her asthma and so is she! She is 15 going on 25. She is homeschooled but like you when they are out of the house I do let them make their own decisions. She always choose crap! Not much I can do for her there. Do you think she might do better on goats milk? Thanks, Sue in CT.
ReplyDeleteShe may do better on goat's milk because it is a little bit easier to digest. I know that I see a difference in my son between raw cow's milk & raw goat's milk. I think the reason for this is HIS body's sensitivity to it, like most asthmatic kids. Most people do fine on cow's milk. But when your dealing with maybe a sensitivity or inflammatory response, it's wouldn't hurt to try goat's milk. Nigerian goat's milk that is ;)
DeleteI was in the hospital for 10 days when I was 4 years old because of asthma. For me it seemed to get worse when I started school (probably because the only options for something to drink are milk or the water fountain). I have never really liked milk, the taste is not appealing, so I would opt for chocolate milk when given the opportunity. Anytime I would run I would have an attack and I always got asthmatic broncitis in the winter. In the summer my pollen allergies used to set it off as well. I had this problem until they came out with zyrtec. I was on that until I was 19. I was also on accolate. When I was 19 I was in college, I stopped drinking milk and became more active. I also went through a deworming regimine and have not has a problem with asthma sice. Oh and I stopped taking all my meds. I think you are so right about the milk and asthma connection as well as diet. I am so happy not to be plagued with asthma anymore. I never knew what it was like to live until my asthma was gone!

Completely agree with every statement. My daughter was born a micro-preemie, which immediately put her in a high risk for any respiratory issue becoming big and nasty. She was taking live vaccines to prevent RSV, and then she did end up contracting it anyway. She had nasty complication from RSV - she was literally inhaling her food while swallowing, and that caused numerous aspiration pneumonias. Then she was put on a feeding tube to help her throat heal. She was eating all organic food from the day 1, so we felt it was just something she was going to have all her life.
ReplyDeleteWhen she got off the tube, she recovered fully, but her asthmatic wheezing episodes were regular and predictable. Every weather change, environment change, going to a different classroom (getting introduced to new bugs) would set her off, and every little set of sniffles would throw her into a prolonged asthmatic reaction that will last for weeks. Steroids and preventative meds were a must. She was seeing a pulmonologist regularly.
I did some reading and decided to switch her to raw cow's milk from a local farm. Within 3 months she stopped having wheezing episodes. That was over 3 years ago. Since then, she switched schools, moved to another city, another climate. Nothing! She recovers from her colds remarkably quick (we never medicate her). She never has allergies, digestive issues, not once an ear infection. She's the tallest in her class. She may catch a cold now and then - typically when the weather changes dramatically, like 30 degrees difference overnight in either direction - but her reaction is minimal, and recovery is swift. I can't say good enough things about raw milk. Since we moved to another state, we had to reassess our choices for local milk. We switched to goat milk. We drink it raw only, never heated, and I make kefir from it and also farmer cheese.
My coworker has a son with severe lactose intolerance (here is the PC term that's coined by who know whom), and chronic asthma. He heard about my raw milk adventures, and finally decided to take a plunge. Since he started - not one asthma attack, and the kid guzzles the milk like no tomorrow - no more "lactose intolerance". BTW, people who are said to be lactose intolerant in 99% cases are intolerant to pasteurized and homogenized milk. They never have reaction to raw milk.
Thanks for sharing your experience with us. Science behind this is surely relevant and interesting, but experiential proof is so much more important!
Many thanks for this post. My family and I are seriously considering purchasing raw milk (most likely cow's, still looking at local resources for goat's). My son has asthma and it took our dr 2 years to get me to admit it. Now I am so beyond over this illness and have heard nothing but great things about raw milk reversing its affects. Our stories are similar and I again am grateful for your sharing!
