Just Kidding!
Actually, I still feel strongly about my original reasons for wanting to homeschool HERE. The hours in school are just plain ridiculous and I know there is a better way to obtain an education!
No, they are not going to Public School. No, they are not going to a charter school.
So, what are we doing???
You may remember HERE how I mentioned a private school called The Glenn J. Kimber Academy.
I loved the vision of The Kimber Academy because it was created by homeschoolers! At first, it was hard to seriously consider because it was expensive, but recently it was approved by the State to recieve tax credit donations for tuition! Basically I could get the $3,200 yearly tuition completely paid for! (I'll explain how below) I went to a couple meetings, then I got REALLY excited. Here's what I liked the most!
Sound great, huh? Now, how to pay for it??
The Glenn J. Kimber Academy is now approved for the Private School Tax Tuition Credit.
What does that mean?
The Education Tax Credit allows taxpayers to decide where their money is spent.
Well, you've probably heard of the Public School Education Tax Credit. It's where donations can me made directly to the school and then it will be refunded when filing taxes. The Private Credit is similar.
The Private School Tax Credit is where friends & family can donate either $503 SINGLE or $1006 JOINT to your child's tuition and when they file their STATE taxes, that amount is subtracted from their tax liability and refunded back to them.
It's a little confusing because although it IS REFUNDABLE, it is applied BEFORE your withholding's are applied, so you basically get all your withholding's back dollar for dollar in what you paid for the TUITION CREDIT.
Still confused?? Here's a sample tax form courtesy of The Kimber Academy. It will show you how the Private School Education Tax Credit is applied to your tax liability and your withholding's refunded.
See? Easy Peasy!
I know it's sometimes hard to ask for friends and family to upfront money for your child's tuition.
BUT, there's a great benefit only available to Private School donors.
The State of Arizona allows 20 million every year to go towards the Education Tax Credit refunds and only about 12 million gets used every year, so man, people! We need to use this opportunity to decide where our tax money is spent!

Basically I could get the $3,200 yearly tuition completely paid for! (I'll explain how below) I went to a couple meetings, then I got REALLY excited. Here's what I liked the most!
- Low Hours - Only 12 hours a week in school. Yes, it covers ALL their curriculum. In fact, most of their students graduate early and obtain top SAT scores. This is the MOST important thing to me. The hours they attended public school were ridiculous and left little time for creative play, family time, service, chores & extra curricular activities. I am so amazed at how it has become "normal" to send our kids to school so long.
- School doesn't start until Sept. 4th - We actually get 3 months of summer! YAY!
- No Homework - (Taken from the Kimber Academy website) -- "At Kimber Academy, teachers do not assign homework. Although there is work done at home which is mainly driven by the students inspiration and desire to learn more about the subjects discussed that day in school. We believe that homework permits teachers to invade the sacred space of home, where all activities should be under the specific direction and inspiration of the parents."
- Sibling Unity - (Taken from the Kimber Academy website) -- "Because students are not separated into grades, siblings are often in the same class. It's amazing how and what they learn at school frequently becomes the subject of conversation at home-if they were in completely different classes, this common ground would not be there to strengthen sibling bonds."
- Parents are the Employers- This was extremely important to me because I felt like MY CONCERNS were overlooked in our public school because I wasn't the expert on education. At the Kimber Academy, the teachers and staff are seen as "employees" of the parents, and therefore carry out the desires and expectations by meeting once a month to discuss goals and progress.
- Children have a voice - In public school, I felt that my children were taught that "they couldn't be trusted" and their ideas and input don't matter. At Kimber Academy, children are encouraged to think, to share their ideas and input on how they want to learn! This is extremely important because it empowers our children to become leaders.
- Learning about God in school (& the reason it is a Private School) - I love that each day starts out with a devotional. What a great way to set the tone & Spirit of the day. Some parents believe we need to put our children in "regular" school so they can be a "light unto the world" and an example to friends not of our faith. I understand that, but I don't see how our children can "be a light unto the world" if they haven't been given time to build their personal testimonies FIRST. It's very hard to NOT be a follower and I believe training my children to become leaders NOW, will help them throughout the rest of their lives.
- Emphasis on Country - (Taken from the Kimber Academy Website) "At Kimber Academy, several hours of study are spent on American history. We believe that today’s youth have a special role in fulfilling America’s destiny. Through these studies, students will develop an appreciation and love for America’s heritage and its Constitutional foundation. As a result, they will be better equipped to lead our country, helping to promote and restore God’s principles of freedom."
- Extra-Curricular Activities Galore! - The Kimber Academy has a huge variety of extra-curricular activites like All forms of Dancing, Gymnastics, Spanish, Art, Band, Music, Symphony, Drama/Theater, Vocal Coaching, Sign Language, Creative Writing, Martial Arts, Sewing, Journalism, Quilting, Cooking, Science, Comedy/Improv and more! This is great, it makes it easier to add an elective at the end of the short school day so as parents, we don't have to drive our kids around to various activities!

- They can donate when they file their taxes and BACKFILE it for the PREVIOUS year. This way, they can see it applied, right then and there! Awesome, huh? This way, it becomes SUPER easy for friends and family to donate.
- For the year 2012, those filing as SINGLE can donate an additional $503 and MARRIED can donate an additional $1006 if they want.
- Businesses can donate as MUCH AS THEY WANT. There's no limit.

You can tell I'm pretty excited about all of this. I feel like this is EXACTLY what I was looking for. What a great opportunity for my children to get a great leadership education, develop a true love of learning and spend more time at home! If your interested in The Kimber Academy, visit their website HERE. They have many locations across the US.

I'm really happy for you. As I told you before, a family in my ward is putting their oldest daughter (one of my Beehives) in at the Kimber Academy this year. They are really excited about it.

ReplyDeleteI like it. I use a montessori school for my son. I would consider homeschooling but it's just not "me." Montessori is kind of like homeschooling in my mind. I go in and do lots of crafts with his class and am involved but don't have to be. I also do a lot of "homeschool" things at home that I call parenting:)
Enjoyed your blog.
Good luck with the adoption plans.
Thanks! Yes, it's a lot like Montessori!
DeleteIs this tax credit available in all states? What state are you in? What if your state doesn't have income tax?
ReplyDeleteIt's not available in every state. You'll have to call your state to find out. I'm in Arizona. Basically whatever taxes you owe to the state can be applied to private or public, but again it varies from State to State.
DeleteMy borther in law and sis in law are sending their kids there too!! I have actually thought before that you and her would be good friends because you have a lot of the same goals and way of thinking on a lot of things! Look for Debbie Christensen and her kids William and Gracie!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHey! NO way! Awesome, I'll have to say hi to them!
ReplyDeleteIt looks good. The only thing that gives me pause is that they are not accredited. Does that mean the teachers are not accredited? And, it says nothing on the website about performing arts, but on Sonoran Living Live, they catagorize it as a performing arts school. And are the extra curriculars included in the 12 hours a week or really extra? Are the books and everything included in the $3,200 tuition? Sorry I have so many questions. My son is a little advanced and I would love a program like this that lets me have him at home more often and is based on where they're at personally in the material and learning, as opposed to grade level.
ReplyDeleteThe school & teachers are not accredited because this educational program is outside the norm and don't want to be held down by RULES the National Education Association. They all have bachelors or masters degrees and are trained through Kimber Academy training and of course undergo background checks. Dr. Kimber HAS had YEARS of experience. He has tried his theories, tested his students and has proven it works. The children LEARN to be self governed. Dr. Kimber’s students graduate with HIGH academic scores (they must graduate at a freshman level in college in all 22 academic subjects – something no academic school does in the public system).
ReplyDeleteIt is a performing arts school only at THIS location in AZ because it partners with The Talent Team Organization. (So the national website may not have any information on that yet) The extra-curriculars are in addition to the 12 hours a week if you choose them. We chose the $3,200 tuition which includes the 12 hours, books & 4 credits of extra-curricular hours. That's just the level we chose for our kids. They have other levels which also include traveling teams for dance, sports, etc. I figure when my kids get older, they'll want to be away from home more and become more involved.
I hope that answers your questions!
Thanks! LOVE that they have different levels of involvement and pricing. As long as the teachers have degrees and training, that's sufficient for me. Just because a teacher has a teaching certificate doesn't mean they're good, unfortunately. I am definitely going to check on it in real life and sit in on some class hours if I can.
DeleteAlso, thanks for always responding so quickly. Other blogs have the comments on, but rarely respond :/
Haha, I know I hate when bloggers never respond:) The Kimber academy encourage parents to sit in classes all the time , I'm sure they would let a prospective parent visit too. Also, one Thursday a month, parents are required to come and learn about Kimber curriculum so they can really understand what their children are doing and implement it at home.
DeleteI found you on SITS - the title of this post intrigued me to come over for a visit! I too think the hours a child has to be in school is ludicrous, and I do not believe in homework - especially after having been in school for a minimum of 6 hours a day (why can't they get it done within that time frame!?!?!) - hence the reason we chose a program that incorporates both homeschool and class time. As with your school the extra curricular activities are fabulous!
ReplyDeleteYou have definitely found a gem of a school. I can only imagine that your children will benefit greatly from it. Best of luck!
That's great you found a curriculum that incorporates homeschool and class time. I really feel that's the best for kids, I'm glad someone else agrees!
DeleteWOW I didnt know there was such a thing, are they everywhere?
ReplyDeleteMy son is in kindy at public school this year and it is only 3 hours a day. But I would love an option like the above.
I know I couldn't homeschool unless it was absolutely needed and he is an only child so I think the social aspect is important.
If you click on the link for the school, there is a list of locations all over the US and they are always expanding. It's awesome you put your kindergartner in only 3 hours, here in AZ most people do full day kinder and it's horrible!
DeleteThis is so interesting! I couldn't agree more about how long (and wasteful) the regular school hours are - no time to be a child or have family time. We're planning on homeschooling (although our daughter is only two right now, so it is a ways off), but I'll have to look more into this.
ReplyDeleteI love that you're proactive with your daughter's education! I didn't care or reasearch any alternative to public school until I saw my kids suffering. I wish I could turn back the clock, but I'm glad they're still young enough to develop a love of learning!
DeleteWhat a great post! I have a son who is gifted, difficult to teach if not challenged in the right way, and often unmotivated by traditional curriculums ("uh, you know I can do this...so why are we doing it again?!" kind of struggle). We were fortunate enough to have an amazing elementary school teacher who had him for 3 years and made it her personal goal to meet his needs. We are going to miss her dearly now that he is entering 7th grade (a very scary transition, indeed).
ReplyDeleteWe found a charter school that possesses a lot of the qualities you mentioned above. It took 2 years to get him in (thank goodness we started early), but it will be so worth the effort. Their middle school only has 20 kiddos between the two grades, which we love.
It is so great to hear from other parents who have struggled with how best to educate their children. I'm glad you have found the perfect match for your family.
Happy Blogging,
Sarah
I LOVED my daughter's teacher in public school! But your right, sometimes the traditional curriculum just doesn't work. I'm glad more and more of these kind of schools are coming out, it's so wonderful to have so many choices now!
DeleteEducation is yet another area of parenting that can be such a challenge! So glad that you have found something for your family that you can be excited about! I can sense your enthusiasm in every word!! :)
ReplyDeleteVisiting from SITS :)
Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteWow, that sounds like a wonderful school! That's the kind of place I want to send my daughter to when she gets older.
ReplyDeleteDid I mention I was jealous? I'm pretty sure I did.
ReplyDeleteYour newest follower.
Sounds fabulous. We are homeschooling but since we spent 5 years in public school there is so much about the regular school that we miss. Nothing like that Academy in Michigan. Sounds Perfect.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a wonderful school! Happy SITS day!
ReplyDeleteYou know DaNelle, I agree with you! Especially on the Learning to know God, especially in this world where they are trying to "remove" God from everything and everywhere. I wish I could do it,Well done!
ReplyDeleteHappy Sits day SITStah, enjoy a super blessed day!
Love
Visiting from SITS. Holy cow that sounds like an awesome school! I have to say, if we had an option like that here, I'd probably reconsider homeschooling, too. It addresses pretty much every issue I have/had with sending them to public or private school. Have a great weekend! Off to read more.
ReplyDeleteGlad you found something good for you and your children. Schools work best when parents, students, and teachers work together. Happy SITS Day.
ReplyDeleteI would love nothing more than to be able to have a school with those ideas and principles near me! What an awesome opportunity for you and your family. I'm so happy for you! I homeschooled my kids at the beginning but had to return to work and couldn't continue. This would have been wonderful. Great post. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI think I would have really loved a chance at this when my kids were younger. My kids homeschooled, attended Charter School and regular public school. Of the three, I'd have to say the Charter school was my favorite, but your private school there sounds pretty enticing. How's that working out for you?
ReplyDeleteStopping by from SITS! Nice that they have so many extra-curricular activities for the kids--one of the benefits to growing up homeschooled, I got to pick out so many cool extra subjects like photography that weren't offered through the public high school.
ReplyDeleteStopping by from SITS! This school sounds great! I wish I had one like this in my area!!
ReplyDeleteWe homeschool. In fact, I've now successfully graduated my oldest who received a scholarship for college and is now attending. Waaaaay back when we began to have issue with public school and were exploring our options (he was in 2nd grade), we chose hschooling because we couldn't afford private school. Our state doesn't offer tax credits/charter schools or any such. Homeschooling was our only option. But your situation sounds really great. Congrats on having that opportunity! And happy SITS day :)
ReplyDeleteVery interesting concept! It's kind of a blend between public school and home schooling. And you sound really excited about it! Isn't it a great feeling when you find something that you know is just perfect for your situation? I love it when that happens! :) Congrats on being featured on SITS!
ReplyDeleteWow! Love this concept! My oldest starts kindergarten next year, and then my daughter the year after that. Are these schools located all over the country? We are a military family and move every couple of years. If there are a lot of these campuses, we may have to try to get stationed close to them.
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS Day!
We send our daughter to an independent school, she's in first grade now and while it's not my ideal school, it has a lot of opportunities and a great social curriculum. I don't think my state has the private school tuition tax credit though. :-(
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day.
Hi...happy sits day...you are now my FAVORITE BLOG EVER! Just saying. I live in Phoenix and private school...I almost home schooled, but I love my kids too much to do that to them.
ReplyDeleteSo...humor me if you will. I know about the credit (had I known about this school we may have chosen it), but are you saying if someone donates for 2012, they can also back donate for 2011? I am just a bit confused...but I *must* know.
Found you from SITS. I'm a huge advocate for private school (especially since I'm the product of one). The public schools in this town are so terrible, people will send their kids an hour away to school. We're not even pregnant yet and I'm already researching the local private schools.
ReplyDeleteI am totally onboard with the whole parents are the boss. I think public schools should adopt that, I really do. Although I can understand to an extent why they don't. I mean it's not like you put a whole lot of thought into where your child is going to attend school when they are in public school. But I have been in far too many battles with school administration over what's the best for MY kids. And quite frankly, I'm the expert on MY kids. So I don't see why there has to be such a power struggle. If I say this is what's best for my child, then at least explore it with me don't put me off and shoot me down. Don't make unilateral decisions. Parents should be involved and it's not a wonder that so many parents aren't involved. It's hard when the school won't be reasonable and work with you. Can you tell I have been in a few too many battles? I'm not so sure about some of the other philosophies like the no homework thing. As much as I hate homework I do think it has its place. Now if only the teachers would teach us first how they are teaching things so when our kids come to us we don't confuse them ;). This does sound like an interesting concept though.
ReplyDeleteHappy belated SITS day.
What an AWESOME school!!! I am so wishing there was something like that here in Westerville, Ohio! So glad you found the perfect place for your children to grow and thrive... :)
ReplyDeleteWow! This sounds IDEAL. 12 hours a week and no homework sounds about right. We can spend our whole day learning...it doesn't have to be done looking at a chalk board. And sibling togetherness option- I LOVE this!
ReplyDeleteI've heard so many good testimonials on homeschooling... it's just still so new in Penang, Malaysia...
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a great way for kids to learn, I'll have to research to see if that is also in CT :) Thanks for sharing this valuable information!
ReplyDeleteHappy SITS day :)
